The Emtech ZM-2 Antenna Tuner is a nifty little portable transmatch for QRP (low power). It utilizes the well-known Z-match circuit, which is especially useful for balanced antennas (like dipoles and loops).

The Design. The circuit diagram is shown in figure 1. The circuit arrangement of L1-L2, C1 & C2 is identical to that which I described as the AR Single coil Z Match, Amateur Radio (AR) April and May 1993. Figure 1 Single Coil Z Match - Circuit Diagram. A well-designed Z-match tuner has a high Q and is more efficient (less lossy) than other types of tuners. The fixed inductor simplifies construction (no taps or rollers needed). Using a toroid inductor and some small poly film variable capacitors, the Z-match can be built into a very compact package. This sort of thing usually appeals to QRPers.

Z-Match Antenna Tuner This Z-Match is a link coupled all-band tuner. Two all band tank circuits cover 3-14mhz and 14-30mhz. The tank output links are selected with a very heavy duty SPDT rotary switch. In addition to the basic Z-Match circuit, the tuner houses a 1KW dummy load, a Heathkit SWR/Power meter, and an antenna selector switch.

G3VGR's Single Coil Z-Match Tuner This QRP version by G3WQW, using a T130-2 toroidal inductor and polyvaricon variable capacitors was published in Sprat #84. An article in QRP Quarterly by Charlie Lofgren, W6JJZ recommended using a T130-6 instead of a T130-2 for better Q and provided new turns values for use with the T130-6 toroid.
